God Bless Creativity

Just thought I'd inspire myself more. Yesterday, we were filming scenes for our audio-video presentation for Intro to Communication and in the process, more ideas just kept flowing. We have to convince the viewers that print is the best medium of communication. I'm excited to see the output. Good luck to us.

The Optimist Creed

Promise Yourself:

1. To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

2. To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

3. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

4. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.

5. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. (Well, it is more realistic also to prepare for the worst!)

6. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

7. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

8. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

9. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

10. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

Hurray for optimism!

I'm not sure about #2 though. Wouldn't people punch you for annoying them like that? :S

"Maybe We're The Pieces"

Tikkun Olam.
Tikkun Olam.

Translated, it means "repairing the world" or "perfecting the world" and it's a theory in Judaism. I came across this phrase while I was reading "Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist", when Norah was explaining the idea to Nick. Basically, the concept of tikkun olam is that the world is broken down into pieces. Pieces, meaning chaos and disorder. And it's each person's job to find these pieces and glue them back together. Or in other words, it's our job to repair this fragmented world.

That idea, the idea that the world is broken, totally appeals to me. And I agree with Norah when she felt that the older people get, the more the world breaks and the more it wouldn't make sense to them. I guess that's the challenge we all have to face as we last longer in this life. We have to overcome this confusion, this disarray, in order for us to 'heal' the world. It's just sad that we're all caught up in our own mess to even look for these pieces.

Although, what hit me most about Nick and Norah's conversation about tikkun olam, was when Nick said this,

"Maybe that's it. With what you're talking about before. The world being broken. Maybe it isn't that we're supposed to find the pieces and put them back together."

"Maybe we're the pieces."

And then the chapter ends with Nick's,

"Maybe, what we're supposed to do is come together. That's how we stop the breaking."

...I guess it's really something to think about, huh?

Time, Please Stop For A While

...I don't want to turn into a lady yet. Tomorrow is a day I dread. Can't I remain seventeen for a little longer?

City Lights And Starry Skies

Last night, I looked up at the sky from my bedroom window. There I saw a lone star, shining brightly. Then I thought, "What a beautiful star! But why is it lonely? Where are its friends?". Probably hidden, eclipsed by the dominant city lights.

City lights, concrete pavements, towering structures, city skylines...Don't you just love the urban scene? and rush hours, the traffic, jam packed malls, and noisy markets...ahhh yes, that's city life. Everything commercial and industrial is here. What more could you ask for? A lot...

I miss gazing up at starry skies and watching the moon cradle her little twinkling daughters. And then there are the trees that stand tall and proud, and are not overshadowed by buildings. I wish to be in a place where birds fly freely, not worried about being shot down. I long to find the serenity that nature gives to its viewer, and the soft clean breeze that caresses the skin. Ah Mother Nature! Where art thou?

Is it possible for a city and nature to live side by side? Yes, it is. I grew up in a place as such. If only other cities would've done the same.

Video Games and Their Positive Effects

For years, it has been claimed that video games are a bad influence to the young ones. Worried parents have discouraged their kids to play these games because they fear that the latter would initiate hostile actions. This could be true in some cases but studies have shown that most hardcore gamers do not exhibit vicious behavior in real life. Furthermore, to assert that all video games contain violence and mature sexual content is an ignorant accusation. In fact, they have many good effects on gamers, young and old. Most people overlook this truth.

Video games not only provide entertainment for the self but also promote teamwork and cooperation when played with friends or family. A father could use video games to bond with his son and bring them closer together. A video game is also said to develop a child's self-confidence as he perfects his gaming skills. His success in mastering a game builds up his self-esteem. Another positive effect is that games contribute knowledge in certain areas and inspire new interests. A gamer could learn more about China's ancient history from the game series Dynasty Warriors. Similarly, video games like Mass Effect and Final Fantasy could spark a person's interest in the sci-fi and fantasy genre. What's more, studies show that playing video games could be a good exercise for the brain and visual skills. Researchers say that video game players have an edge over non-video game players when it comes to the visual attention ability. Furthermore, playing video games practices the user's hand-eye coordination as he focuses on the screen while handling the joystick or controller. The results of one study prove that surgeons who play commit fewer errors than those who don't play.

* Although games may not be the cause of teenage violence, they may still have bad effects depending on the gamer. A child's performance in school is often affected by his video game playing. Also, a child could learn bad language from the games he plays. It is up to the parents to discipline their child, limit the time spent on playing these games, and choose which ones are suitable.
